PLAYING 7 STRINGS BRAZILIAN GUITAR ON A 6 STRINGS INSTRUMENT.

One of the coolest things you can find on Brazilian music is a seven strings guitar. The range of those guitars is amazing. They get really low and can play some interesting bass lines.

I was one of those guys who would wish to have a seven strings guitar but at the same time I don’t like to complicate things too much. So I thought how it would be to tune down my six strings guitar to get the range of a seven strings. That is how I ended up with the tuning CGDGBE.

It works like a charm. You can play all those low bass lines known as baixarias from a seven strings while playing the normal stuff you already know on the six.

In order to get used to this alternative guitar tuning let’s play a couple of exercises. If you pay attention there is not much difference with the standard tuning. Only the sixth and fifth strings.

We will start by playing the C major scale on the first position.

Now let’s extend it.

Next is the G major scale in first position.

And the G major scale extended.
