Traditional Chinese Music for Guitar

Fernando Perez

In cart Not available Out of stock

"If a sound could express a mountain´s mightiness, the vast depth of the ocean, the harmony of a tree swinging with the wind, or the intensity of silence, we would find it in Chinese music. " Fernando Perez

1- White Snow in the Spring Sunlight From the early Ming dynasty, this cheerful tune portrays a vivid scene in early spring, when the first green and flowers appear after a long cold winter. The snow covers and protects the plants and raises hopes for rich harvests in the coming year.

2- Honghe Yejing (Red River) Inspired in a folk melody from the Yi people it describes a romance by the Red river.

3- High Mountains and Flowing Water The story of woodsman Zhong Ziqi and Guqin master Yu Boya is the symbol of true friendship in China. Two friends understanding each other. When master Yu played expressing the sound of the mountains Ziqi without knowing Yu´s intentions exclaimed "how magnificent are the mountains", when Yu played the sound of water Ziqi understood the motion and mood of water. Even though Yu was reluctant to find an understanding friend in a woodsman, after his comments an exemplary friendship begun.

4- Drunken Singing Night Fishing Composed by a poet from theTang dynasty while he was enjoying a boat ride and saw a drunken fisherman who was singing.

5- Heroic Little Sisters on the grassland This composition tells the epic story of two Mongolian girls Long Mei and Yu Rong. Walking in the fields, caring for their herd, facing a terrible storm and marching throughout the freezing night to end up blossoming in a new day.

6- The Grand Hujia (excerpt) Cai Wenji from the Han dynasty was captured during a war while out of the Great Wall. A long time later when she came back home it was too late to see her family again. With the grief in her heart she composed a poem called The Grand Hujia.

7- Moonlight over the river in Spring Jiangnan, its villages and waters are model for the most charming Chinese paintings. This composition is also inspired by its beauty.

8- Great waves sweeping away sand One again Chinese music gets inspiration from nature, expressing its wonders hidden in the simplest things.

9- Yi people The Yi people live in the mountain areas of Southwest China. They are mainly farmers and herdsmen. This dance is about love and courtship.

10- Chai Tou Feng In the garden of Shen Yuan there are two poems. Lovers longing for each other only able to reciprocate with words. Lu You he wrote first. Then she found his words during a stroll in the garden. With tears in her eyes Tan Wan wrote an answer. But that was as close as they would ever get…

Blues & Roots

Fernando Perez

In cart Not available Out of stock

This Blues & Roots repertoire is based on the early blues and bluegrass music created in the United States of America back in 1900s. A special musical instrument known as Resophonic, Dobro or National guitar has been used along an acoustic steel guitar. The first one is mostly played in the "bottleneck style" (fitting a bottleneck on the finger) and the second "lap steel style" used in bluegrass music.

Dedicated in loving memory of harmonicaplayer and friend Louie Lista.

1- Blues March It is inspired in the early blues style used in parties back in the days. A bluesman would go to a drinking joint and make a living grooving people and keeping them dancing all night long.

2- Train song The train was always a symbol of freedom. Few were those who could scape from the cotton fields jumping on the train, hoping to reach a better place.

3- Friends I composed this tune remembering all those friends made along the road. During my days learning the Blues from California to Missouri. Remembering country side evenings at any backyard in Kansas.

4- High society The classic ragtime sound of the early 1900s. That amazing guitar playing used to be called "piano style". It happened that the aristocratic french arrived to the Americas bringing the european classical music. When blues players heard this music readily included touches from it into their blues creating the Ragtimes.

5- Swamp Blues There are many types of Blues. Among the early ones I discovered the swamp blues style. So heavy, you need to be totally worn out to play it right.

6- Spooky It is a musical joke. Playing with jazz sounds creating that atmosphere from the mystery 1930s movies.

7- Bluegrass dance I still remember the first time I entered in an all american Western saloon. Cowboy hats, jeans, boots, and cheerful people dancing to the sound of a good bluegrass tune.

8- The morning song It is a little piece I made up one morning when I have just moved to California. Used to play it as I woke up, receiving the warm sunrise in the West coast.

9- Going down to the river A nice stroll down to the river, enjoying the country side and jumping in the water to cool down the summer afternoons by the Mississippi.

10- Louie & I After meeting during a Blues jam in Los Angeles, Louie and I met in my place at Hollywood Blvd. I threw a mic and recorded all might come. Here is the result, at around 2 min 40 sec you can even hear the neighbour downstairs hitting the ceiling to complain for the music!

11- The way back home I wrote this tune one night after work as I was coming back tired and weary. Letting go the many thoughts in my head just walking my way back home.

12- Wiki Wiki Ragtime I composed this tune giving it a hawaiian twist. Wishing to put all the fun and groovy feel into a cheerful melody.

13- Farewell Remembering all those friends made along the road. Always remembering the words "there is people for a reason, for a season and for a lifetime".

Alexandria (Fantasy for Guitar & String Quartet)

Fernando Perez

In cart Not available Out of stock

“Alexandria is a place where many souls dwell, spirits who sail bearing storms and calm days. The Bride of the Sea, nurturing mother and confidant friend. We Alexandrians live in this realm of glory so frail. Yet Alexandria is everywhere and Alexandrian is every man.”

Fernando Pérez

Fernando Perez composed Alexandria during his life in the city before and during the 2011 egyptian revolution.

After years living in the historic city Mr. Perez wanted to write a musical work that reflected the deepest and most spiritual side of Alexandrians.

The first part has several movements which reflect all these along with Perez personality and touch.

The Second part is a collection of guitar solo pieces composed inspired in different places around the city and using the flavour of the different cultures which have enriched Alexandria since long ago.

1-The Path - At the gates of twilight we discover a trail leading us away, into a world of wonder, back to simplicity and magic.

2-Heavenly - Reaching blue skies with white clouds of purity in a holy day when the wind blows fresh.

3-Rain Coming - Autumn is arriving with a curtain of raindrops sweeping from the sea into the city.

4-The Storm - CLeanses everywhere, pruning our faults from blame.

5-Pharos Canon - Only while lost in a sea of toil, the world taking over our souls, we find the light that leads us home.

6-Alexandrian Waltz - With steps of celebration we rejoice for again one life´s adventure we have overcome.

Solo Guitar

7-Paseo Flamenco - An Spaniard around Alexandrian alleys.

8-El Ionani - Inspired during the nights at the Greek club in Ibrahimiya.

9-Alexandrian Waltz - The European capital in the Middle East.

10-Greek Rebetiko - The Greek flavour still present in town.

Bonus Track

11-Rumba Alexandrina - Performed live in the Bibliotheca of Alexandria Auditorium, a rumba dedicated to Alexandrians.

The musical work was premiered at the Alexandria International Festival and again presented as a farewell concert by Fernando Perez when the artist decided to leave the country during the 2011 egyptian revolution.

This last farewell concert was attended by a full house audience. Among them were Alexandrians, several consuls from foreign countries, and representatives of different cultural alexandrian associations.

Heartbeats from the Middle East

Fernando Perez

In cart Not available Out of stock

Two countries have shared a common function in the history of the Eastern and Western worlds, on one side Egypt, a place of encounters between all the different communities of the Middle and Far East, on the other Spain, where East meets West, a nurturing land for sharing between the two worlds and platform to impulse new ideas and cultural growth towards both sides. Now Egyptian and Spanish artists and music researchers Fernando Perez and Mohammed Antar present their new project, based on the idea of continuing the long lasted tradition and relation between their two native lands. They introduce a musical repertoire in a recital full of fresh original compositions made in the traditional style, preserving and respecting its values as well as blending it with new visions. The two artists delight the listeners with musical works, which range from Middle Eastern sounds to Spanish Flamenco and take a step further experimenting with other musical backgrounds such as Indian, Jazz or even Brazilian music, finding always a new common ground to bring humanity together.

The compositions are performed in Egyptian Ney; an eastern instrument from the flute family; Spanish guitar, Arabic guitar; which is a special design created by Mr. Perez in order to perform eastern music in a western instrument; as well as Middle Eastern and Flamenco percussions. Andalusi tunes, Turkish style Longas, and even the passionate sounds of Spanish Rumbas and Bulerias in a fusion that aims towards preserving the tradition while finding the natural blend between the musical cultures and new contemporary ideas.
